European Capitals of Small Retail

Official Launch: Caldas da Rainha – European Capital of Small Retail 2026

Caldas da Rainha (Portugal) will officially launch its year as European Capital of Small Retail 2026 with a celebration event on 26 March 2026 at the Centro Cultural e de Congressos de Caldas da Rainha, bringing together local retailers, community organisations, and European stakeholders to celebrate the city’s commitment to vibrant commerce.

Earlier this year, Caldas da Rainha was awarded the title in the “Vibrant City” category. This distinction highlights the city’s strong commitment to supporting local retailers, revitalising its historic centre and strengthening community life through culture, innovation, and sustainable habits.

The European Capitals of Small Retail is a European initiative, proposed by the European Parliament, based on a citizens petition, and implemented by the European Commission. It recognises cities that demonstrate a strong commitment to supporting small retailers and maintaining strong local commerce. The initiative highlights the important role of neighbourhood retail in local economies and community life, while encouraging cities across Europe to exchange good practices and strengthen their local retail ecosystems.

Launch event – 26 March 2026

The celebration will mark the beginning of Caldas da Rainha’s title year as European Capital of Small Retail, showcasing the initiatives and partnerships that earned this recognition.

The event will bring together representatives of European institutions, national and regional authorities, local businesses, cultural organisations and the media to celebrate the role of neighbourhood retail in vibrant European cities.

Programme highlights:

  • A performative tour “Alter Egos de Bordallo” through the historic commercial streets, at 11:00.
  • Demonstrations of local crafts and products, between 14:30 and 16:00, at Centro Cultural e de Congressos de Caldas da Rainha.
  • The official ceremony celebrating the European Capital of Small Retail 2026 title, at 16:00 at Centro Cultural e de Congressos de Caldas da Rainha, presented by Fátima Lopes and featuring a musical performance by Stereossauro, an artist from Caldas da Rainha.

Similar celebration events will also take place in the other two winning cities of the 2026 edition - Schlanders/Silandro (Italy), which received the award in the “Vanguard City” category, on 17 April, and Barcelona (Spain), winner in the “Visionary City” category (date to be confirmed).

A year of European exchange

Throughout 2026, the three winning cities will take part in networking events, exchanges and knowledge-sharing initiatives promoting best practices and strengthening small retail across Europe.
